Library, Apothecary & Bordello Set Design for Witches of East End

TV Series - 2013–2014

Production Design By: Rachel O’Toole

This multi-purpose set for Witches of East End was designed as a flexible 2,400 ft² environment capable of transforming across multiple time periods. Originally built as a library, the space was later redressed into a 1906 apothecary and an 1800s bordello, demonstrating how strategic scenic design, layout planning, and period detailing can completely redefine a single set while maintaining structural continuity.
This project showcases the design and construction of a versatile multi-use set for Witches of East End, spanning approximately 2,400 square feet on the main level. The space was originally built as a library and later redressed into a 1906 apothecary and an 1800s bordello, supporting multiple storylines within the same architectural footprint.

The design required a highly adaptable framework, allowing the environment to shift seamlessly between distinct historical periods while maintaining structural continuity. Through strategic scenic design, material selection, and layout planning, the set was able to transform its identity while preserving core architectural elements. Each iteration emphasized period-appropriate detailing, atmospheric storytelling, and efficient reuse of space, enabling production to maximize both visual impact and budget efficiency. The transitions between library, apothecary, and bordello demonstrate the power of redressing in television production—where lighting, props, finishes, and layout redefine the same environment for entirely different narrative contexts.

This project highlights expertise in film and television set design, adaptive environments, scenic redressing, and period-based production design, delivering a flexible and visually rich set for episodic storytelling.
